As cofounder and Vice President of On The Court, Matthew has a natural gift to coach and develop young student-athletes and college-level players.
At the age of 6 Matthew would set up cones in his steeply inclined driveway and do dribbling drills, then take 1000 shots a day at the hoop at the end of the driveway. As a student-athlete, Matthew had to prove himself according to the phrase, “you can't teach height”. Matthew started playing basketball at the Y and then on to the town’s recreation league. Although his first town team didn’t win a game, Matthew’s passion was basketball. Matthew quickly progressed to Travel basketball in 5th grade where he was cut and then asked to join the team. Matthew worked during the summer on his game and during his 6th grade year, his skills earned him a spot on the 7th grade travel basketball team. Being the shortest player, the youngest player on the 7th grade team motivated Matthew to prove that he belonged with the older players.
Matthew played AAU for two consecutive championship teams, first CBC and then the New Haven Heat, who won a National AAU Title. Matthew also played for the Connecticut Passion for one year.
Matthew attended The Masters' School in 8th grade and started on the varsity team as the starting point guard. He was selected co-captain as a 9th grader on the team at The Masters School. Always wanting to play for his hometown school, Matthew transferred to Hall High as a sophomore and was the starting varsity point guard that year. He became co-captain in his junior and senior years and was selected to the all-CCC league team in his senior year. Although the pandemic changed the course for Matthew and all students, Matthew was able to score 1,000 points during his high school career validating one of his goals as a student-athlete. Matthew is best known for buzzer-beating shots in a couple of big games.
Matthew always pushed himself to be competitive as a 5’8 point guard. His goal was to play basketball in college which he achieved when he was recruited to play for the University of St. Joseph by Jim Calhoun.
Matthew says the key to his success was the opportunity to have basketball workouts and training with many coaches in a variety of settings. Matthew has always taken advantage of one-on-one training or group training sessions to work on his ball handling, shooting, and footwork. Working with personal trainers and coaches since 8th grade has provided Matthew with the experience of training and coaching basketball players of all ages.
At the present time, Matthew is an athlete trainer and lifeguard for the YMCA in New Britain in addition to running a summer camp. Matthew's approach is hands-on and personal attention to the development and growth of boys and girls he has been training for the past 3 years. His goal is the help student-athletes achieve the highest level of play which the athletes truly enjoy working with Matthew. Many parents have requested for Matthew to workout with their child because of the results of improved skills.
When Matthew is not training athletes, you can find him at the men’s basketball league playing with and against current and former college players still perfecting his game On The Court!
